Next term we are hoping to help with the nightly struggle of reading, and encourage the children to take on the responsibility of reading at home. The children will need to read three times a week at least and get three signatures a week from parents or carers. If, when the reading diaries are checked, there are no signatures or less than three they will lose parts of their golden time.
For most children this will not be any different from what usually happens, however for others we know that the nightly battles can be exhausting. We are hoping that this will encourage the children to be more independent with their reading and will actively come and ask to read to you.
We suggest that they read for a minimum of 10 minutes, but obviously longer is greatly encouraged. Once your child has read for a bit, it is good for the children to discuss the book with you, and you can see how much they have understood from their reading. Also encourage your child to ask you about any words they do not understand and to write them in the box in their reading diaries for vocabulary vulture. This will help towards 'Boris the Book Worm'.
The children know about this new reading rule, and they know that six signatures should be in their diaries for when they come back to school (3 per week).
Below is a link that has some good questions you can ask before/during/after reading with your child.
